Taiwanese artist Wang Ya-Hui's abstract video and installation work explored time and nature
Wang Ya-Hui, a Taiwanese artist who passed away in 2023 at the age of fifty, produced a wide-ranging portfolio over twenty years, encompassing video, photography, and installations. Her 2021 video, The Smell of Rice Field, incorporates cardboard circles and narratives reflecting her experiences as a rural educator. Wang first gained acclaim by winning the Taipei Art Award in 2002 for her piece Falling. She was involved in three Taipei Biennials, including a posthumous participation in 2023, and showcased her work globally at venues such as the Shanghai Biennale (2006) and the Hors Pistes Film Festival (2008). Her 2019 exhibition, A Brief History of Time, investigated the concept of time, while her later works included the kinetic sculpture I am a branch (2012) and her final video installation – – [one and one] (2022).
