Taipei Biennial 2023 Explores Shelter and Connection Through 'Small World' Theme

The Taipei Fine Arts Museum is currently hosting the 2023 Taipei Biennial, titled 'Small World,' which showcases over 58 artists until March 24. Curators focus on Taiwan's security issues in light of possible threats from Mainland China. Paul Virilio's images of Nazi bunkers from 'Bunker Archaeology' (1975) evoke comparisons to modern doomsday shelters. The exhibition plays with scale, exemplified by Nadim Abbas's 'Pilgrim in the Microworld' (2023). Kim Beom's 'Spectacle' (2010) alters natural imagery, while Terre Thaemlitz's 'Rosary Novena for Gender Transitioning' (2012) challenges traditional gender norms. In November, Yogyakarta's Yes No Wave Music label organized listening sessions. Li Yi-Fan's video 'What Is Your Favourite Primitive?' (2023) examines the boundaries between humans and machines, alongside Yang Yooyun's poignant paintings and Riar Rizaldi's radio play. Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork's inflatable maze stands in stark contrast to enduring bunkers.
