Taiki Sakpisit's Experimental Films Explore Thailand's Political Trauma Through Sensory Montage

exhibition · 2026-04-20

Taiki Sakpisit, a filmmaker based in Bangkok, focuses on Thailand's political violence through his experimental video art. His 29-minute installation, 'Seeing in the Dark,' created in 2021, contrasts military artifacts at the Khao Kho Sacrifice Memorial with footage from the 2020 student protests in Bangkok. In 2018, he produced 'Shadow and Act,' which delves into the Chaya Jitrakorn photo studio and Dusit Zoo. His debut feature, 'The Edge of Daybreak' (2021), is a psychological drama featuring music by Yasuhiro Morinaga. Additionally, his short films 'A Ripe Volcano' and 'Three Kings,' both from 2011, document the protests of 2010, while 'A Certain Illness Difficult to Name' (2018) reflects on Singapore. Sakpisit's works from 2012-2013 recontextualize 1980s Thai B-movies to comment on the suppression of Red Shirt protests. 'Seeing in the Dark' was displayed at SAC Gallery from December 13-18, 2021.
