Tadzio's Urban Specters at Galerie Jean Brolly

Tadzio (b. 1975, France) presents large-format photographs and a video at Galerie Jean Brolly in Paris, from November 29 to December 31, 2008. His works depict contemporary urban landscapes as banal and fragmentary, minimally humanized and bordering on emptiness. Solitary figures walk decisively along palisades, garage entrances, or piles of asphalt; their blurred silhouettes contrast with the rigid, mineral weight of the surroundings. Tadzio directs models to walk before his camera, creating semi-spectral figures reminiscent of Antonioni's cinematic urban voids. The atonal, dehumanizing treatment of the urban chronotope serves as a metaphor for deterritorialization. The city contains us but offers no escape; our bodies and destinies are held, yet we remain out-of-scale extras unable to appear gloriously within its frame, which has expanded beyond the Baudelairian flâneur's measure. A video shot in Kuala Lumpur uses time-lapse footage re-projected at normal speed, producing a spectral effect: a city inhabited but dematerialized by the flow of pedestrians and cars like meteors, disconnected from the familiar place. Tadzio's images, far from classic street photography and its implicit homage to the democratic subject, signal an anachronistic kinship with early 20th-century pittura metafisica—a universe of dissolution, uncanny strangeness, and uncertainty where bodies wander or flee, perpetually uprooted.
