Tadeusz Kantor's 1967 Letter Happening Challenged Foksal Gallery's Theory of Place
On January 21, 1967, Tadeusz Kantor dispatched a 2x14 meter letter through eight postal workers to the Foksal PSP Gallery, resulting in its collective obliteration. This incident exemplified Kantor's idea of art as a medium between the sender and the recipient, a notion he developed during his 1965 visit to New York. His perspective stood in opposition to the Theory of Place, proposed by Foksal founders Mariusz Tchorek, Anka Ptaszkowska, and Wiesław Borowski, which prioritized PLACE as an interactive space. Kantor expressed his dissent regarding this theory in a letter from 1972. Established on April 1, 1966, Foksal Gallery initially concentrated on creative processes before evolving towards Conceptual art by 1970, influenced by Kantor and Gostomski's ideas, culminating in exhibitions of critics' documents in 1971-1972.
