Tadashi Kawamata's Wooden Constructions Bridge History and Contemporary Life in Two French Art Centers
Japanese artist Tadashi Kawamata (born 1953, lives in Japan) created site-specific wooden installations at two French art centers: Le Creux de l'enfer in Thiers and Château des Adhémar in Montélimar, from June 25 to September 25, 2005. At Le Creux de l'enfer, a former cutlery factory, he built an elevated platform of stacked planks that cuts through the ground floor, evoking the river's flow that once powered the industry. The installation remains within the exhibition space, suggesting potential expansion beyond. At Château des Adhémar, a former prison, he reopened sealed passages, reconstructed a lost staircase for public access to archaeological areas, and added a walkway along a wall to reconnect a door that opened onto emptiness. Kawamata's temporary structures are not static sculptures but movements and directions, engaging with each site's memory while avoiding melancholic commemoration. He aims to redirect attention toward transformation and future possibilities. The project also involved workshops with art and architecture students, whose models were exhibited. A multi-year project in Saint-Thélo, Brittany, included a second three-week workshop with thirty students, organized by Eternal network. Films by Gilles Coudert documented other ephemeral projects. Kawamata, who will curate the second Yokohama Triennale starting September 2005, acts as a federator and energy passer, connecting past, present, and future across different contexts.
