Tadao Ando to Design 2023 MPavilion in Melbourne Debut

architecture-design · 2026-04-27

Japanese architect Tadao Ando (born 1941 in Minato-ku) will make his Australian debut with the 2023 MPavilion in Melbourne, commissioned by the Naomi Milgrom Foundation for its tenth edition. The pavilion, opening November 16, 2023, will be donated to the community after the summer program. Ando, a Pritzker Prize winner (1995), is known for geometric concrete and glass designs like Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection in Paris and Punta della Dogana in Venice. The MPavilion differs from London's Serpentine Pavilion by involving architects at various career stages and permanently relocating structures. Previous pavilions by OMA (relocated to Monash University) and Sean Godsell (now at Hellenic Museum) exemplify this. Ando describes his design as "eternal in memory of a landscape." The 2022 pavilion by Thai firm all(zone), led by Rachaporn Choochuey, features a recycled-material canopy. Separately, the 2023 Serpentine Pavilion will be designed by Lina Ghotmeh, titled "À table," inspired by Dogon Toguna huts, centered on a communal table.
