Tadao Ando Named Guest Editor of Domus for 2021

publication · 2026-04-27

Japanese architect Tadao Ando has been appointed Guest Editor of Domus magazine for 2021, marking the first time the publication has chosen a non-European for this role. The announcement was made during an online presentation where Ando advised younger generations to "run slowly," echoing the Latin motto "Festina lente" once adopted by Cosimo I de' Medici. Ando, born in Osaka in 1941, is a self-taught architect who started his practice in 1969. He won the Pritzker Prize in 1995 and donated the $100,000 prize to orphans of the Great Hanshin earthquake. Notable projects include Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana in Venice, Teatro Armani in Milan, Fabrica Benetton in Treviso, and the ongoing restoration of Bourse de Commerce in Paris. The appointment continues Domus's 10x10x10 editorial project leading to its centenary in 2028. Ando's first issue (number 1053) will be available in January 2021, with a theme of "eternity" as an intangible concept linked to emotions and memories. The announcement was preceded by a monograph on Ando included with the special issue "Recovering Italy" curated by Fulvio Irace, on newsstands from December 5, 2020.
