Tadaaki Kuwayama, Japanese-born monochrome painter, dies at 91
Japanese-born artist Tadaaki Kuwayama, recognized for his monochrome painting experiments, has passed away. Born in Nagoya, Japan in 1932, he studied nihonga painting at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music until 1956. Fascinated by American and European abstract painting, he emigrated to New York in 1958 with his wife, artist Rakuko Naito. In New York, he developed monochrome works using bright primary colors divided by metal strips. His process became more industrial in the 1970s, employing acrylic and spray paint to create high-sheen metallic finishes, often presenting works freestanding. Kuwayama participated in two significant 1966 exhibitions: Systemic Painting at the Guggenheim Museum in New York and Vormen van de Kleur at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Germany particularly embraced his later austere palette and serial canvas experiments. He held solo exhibitions at Folkwang Museum Essen in 1974, Museum für Konkrete Kunst Ingolstadt in 1997, and Galerie Renate Bender Munich in 1997 and 2002. In June 2023, The Mayor Gallery in London presented a joint exhibition of Kuwayama and Naito. His work resides in public collections including the Guggenheim Museum and The Museum of Modern Art in New York, Folkwang Museum in Essen, and Neue Nationalgalerie in Berlin. He was influenced by encounters with artists like Donald Judd and Frank Stella.
