Tacita Dean's Film Installation at Palazzo Dugnani, Milan

exhibition · 2026-04-23

The Fondazione Nicola Trussardi, directed by Massimiliano Gioni, presented an exhibition of works by Tacita Dean at the 17th-century Palazzo Dugnani in Milan from May 12 to June 21, 2009. The exhibition featured a self-contained circuit of fourteen 16 mm films, including the installation Stillness (2008) showing Merce Cunningham performing static poses to John Cage's 4'33". Other films depicted artist Mario Merz (2002), natural phenomena like Banewl (1999), Diamond Ring (2002), and Amadeus (2008), as well as objects in Prisoner Pair (2008). Two films commissioned by the foundation, Day for Night and Still Life, were shot in Giorgio Morandi's studio at the Museo d'Arte Moderna di Bologna, showing his objects and placement marks. Dean's long takes contrast with television's rapid editing, aiming to capture the rare 'green ray' atmospheric phenomenon as a metaphor for transcendent truth. Stillness was also scheduled to screen at Centquatre in Paris from November 25 to December 4, 2009, as part of the Festival d'Automne.
