Tacita Dean's Exhibition at Marian Goodman Gallery Explores Artistic Process with Clouds, Smoke, and History

From March 3 to April 23, 2016, Tacita Dean showcased "...my English breath in foreign clouds" at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York. This exhibition included new photographs, drawings, and three films that delved into themes of artistic observation and creation. A Concordance of Fifty American Clouds (2015-2016) featured photographs and slate drawings inspired by Shakespeare. The 16-minute film Portraits (2016) depicted David Hockney smoking in his Los Angeles studio, producing serene smoke patterns against blue backdrops. Buon Fresco (2014) presented a close-up view of Giotto di Bondone's frescoes from the Upper Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. GAETA, 2015 showcased fifty images of Cy Twombly's studio in Gaeta, Italy, while Event for a Stage (2015) was a 50-minute film featuring Stephen Dillane, exploring the artist-performer dynamic. The exhibition connected contemporary and historical artistic practices, referencing figures like Shakespeare, Giotto, Hockney, Twombly, and Dillane, and was displayed across multiple floors at 24 W 57th Street, offering varied viewing experiences for each film.
