SZ Sugar miart commission: David Lieske wins first edition

award · 2026-04-26

The Milanese music publisher SZ Sugar (founded 1907 as ESZ – Edizioni Suvini Zerboni) has partnered with the art fair miart to launch a triennial commission, SZ Sugar miart commission. The competition invited artists from all 178 galleries to interpret the first page of Luciano Berio's score "Allez Hop" (1952–1959), with a libretto by Italo Calvino. David Lieske (Hamburg, 1979), represented by Corvi – Mora gallery in London, won the €5,000 prize. His work will be exhibited in its original version and reproduced in a limited edition for sale at the SZ Sugar stand during miart. The commission marks the start of a three-year collaboration aiming to blend contemporary art and music, echoing miart's 28th edition theme "no time no space" and SZ Sugar's motto of daily invention. The dialogue continues with miartalks: on Friday April 12 at 3:30 PM, "Beyond Berio" features Lieske with composers Filippo del Corno and Nicola Sani; at 5 PM, "Centro di gravità permanente" involves singer-pianist Raphael Gualazzi and miart artistic director Nicola Ricciardi; on Sunday April 14 at 6 PM, composers Ivan Fedele and Giovanni Verrando join Ricciardi for "L'artista plurale oltre il tempo e lo spazio".
