Syria.Art Association Promotes Syrian Contemporary Art Globally
Founded in 2012 amid political unrest, the Syria.Art Association was created by Humam Alsalim and Danii Kessjan as a social media page to archive and promote Syrian art. The initiative expanded with Khaled Youssef, launching Syrian Creative Havens—a series exploring artists' studios and displacement—and the Cyrrus Online Gallery for selling Syrian contemporary art. In 2015, the project was registered in Nice, France, enhancing credibility. The association aims to provide a platform for Syrian artists, both in Syria and the diaspora, to gain international recognition without the burden of self-promotion. Syrian contemporary art reflects the country's complex society, influenced by political orientations and diverse art schools, with recent themes of war, migration, and injustice. Women artists remain marginalized, with patriarchal structures limiting their representation in galleries and museums. The association has not yet collaborated with Syrian schools but hopes to expand its digital archive and physical presence in the Middle East, though financial constraints and the recent earthquake in Syria have shifted priorities toward disaster relief. The association believes culture can foster peace and dialogue by facilitating exchange and challenging stereotypes, as experienced from South Korea to Canada.
