Sylvie Réno Transforms a Doomed House into a Cardboard Construction Site

exhibition · 2026-04-23

From March 30 to May 26, 2007, Sylvie Réno showcased her work at 40mcube in Rennes, France, within a house slated for demolition known as the Château. Réno, recognized for her cardboard sculptures, transformed the space into a construction site. The ground level is cluttered with scaffolding and debris, while the upper levels feature shoring and stepladders, culminating in an attic filled with painting supplies. Her artwork investigates how the ordinary can be reshaped through cardboard, which embodies both fragility and resilience. Influenced by post-minimalist seriality, her sculptures evoke still life reminiscent of Giorgio Morandi. This exhibition was part of the "Chantier Public" residency cycle, and critic Jean-Marc Huitorel commended the installation's aesthetic and the delicate texture of the cardboard.
