Sydney Unveils 4,500 sqm Town Hall Plaza Design After 40 Years

The City of Sydney has released new renders of a public square opposite Sydney Town Hall, a project conceived over 40 years ago. The 4,500 square metre plaza, designed by lead architect JPW and landscape architects ASPECT Studios, will feature a semi-circular clearing with a misting fountain, movable furniture, and native trees providing shade to about 50% of the site. The project, expected to cost $150 million, will require the acquisition and demolition of seven buildings, with demolition slated to start in 2028 and completion in 2031. Lord Mayor Clover Moore called it a 'once-in-a-generation opportunity' and a 'fantastic' addition that will unify the CBD, drawing inspiration from European squares. However, Business Sydney executive director Paul Nicolaou expressed concerns about 'unwanted disruption' to the commercial hub during post-Covid recovery. Moore assured that the council will assist businesses in relocating. The design aims to connect disjointed public spaces and Victorian sandstone buildings into a unified civic area, suitable for both intimate gatherings and large celebrations.
