Sydney's artist population shrinks 17% while becoming less diverse
Between 2011 and 2021, Greater Sydney's professional artist population declined by 17% despite a 20% overall employment increase, a trend unique among Australian capital cities. The decline affected all areas, not just the inner city, and was accompanied by reduced racial and economic diversity. Anglo-Australian artists were overrepresented by about 20% across Sydney and 22% in Western Sydney, a consistency maintained from 2011 to 2021. Household income data revealed artists were overrepresented in higher-income brackets, likely due to partner or family support offsetting low personal income. A 2025 survey of 300 professional artists found 57% considering leaving Sydney and 80% knowing colleagues who had left. Average housing costs consumed 40% of income, and workspace costs were three times what artists could afford. After expenses, the average artist lived on A$7,816–$10,640 annually. Only about 20% received state or local government funding, and 13% federal. Funding appeared concentrated among inner-city, higher-income, less diverse demographics. The trend may be spreading to other Australian cities as housing and living costs rise nationally.
