Sydney Modern expansion by SANAA to double Art Gallery of New South Wales space in 2022
A new AU$344 million building designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architects SANAA will nearly double the exhibition space of the Art Gallery of New South Wales when it opens in Sydney in 2022. The project, funded by AU$244 million from the New South Wales government and private donors, coincides with the museum's 150th anniversary. The expansion includes a 2,200-square-meter decommissioned Second World War oil tank repurposed for large-scale contemporary works and a dedicated 960-square-meter gallery for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. Director Dr Michael Brand emphasized that the transformation aims for a more inclusive public engagement and global art perspective, referencing Sydney's unique worldview. Located on Gadigal of the Eora Nation land, the gallery's collection spans Australian art from the early 19th century to the present, along with significant Aboriginal, Asian, and European holdings. The development is expected to set new ecological design standards, with construction completion scheduled for 2022.
