Sydney Biennale 2024 Announces 'Ten Thousand Suns' Theme and Initial Artist Roster

The 24th Sydney Biennale, scheduled to open in March 2024, will adopt the title 'Ten Thousand Suns' under the curatorial direction of Cosmin Costinaș and Inti Guerrero. This edition focuses on celebration as a political strategy, emphasizing abundance and generosity while challenging pervasive crisis narratives. Curators described the exhibition as a 'carnival of rays and radiance' that revisits histories of collective resistance and exuberance. An extensive initial artist list features over forty participants from diverse global backgrounds, including Adebunmi Gbadebo (USA), Alberto Pitta (Brazil), Anne Samat (Malaysia), and Bonita Ely (Australia). Other notable artists include Francisco Toledo (Mexico), Freddy Mamani (The Plurinational State of Bolivia), Hayv Kahraman (Iraq/Sweden/USA), and Tracey Moffatt (Australia). The selection highlights Indigenous and diasporic perspectives, with strong representation from Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the Asia-Pacific region.
