market-auction · 2026-08-18

On October 6 and 7, Sworders auction house will showcase 250 items from the remarkable private collection of James Birch, a well-known art dealer, curator, gallerist, and author. Birch gained fame for bringing Francis Bacon to Moscow in 1988 and introducing Gilbert & George to both Moscow and China in 1990, as well as hosting Grayson Perry's first solo shows. His collection includes more than twelve of Perry's works. Birch's career kicked off at Christie's in the Old Master department before he focused on Rock and Roll memorabilia. In 1983, he established his gallery, James Birch Fine Art, on King's Road, paving the way for British contemporary art. His artistic journey began with his parents meeting at Chelsea Art College, where his mother studied under Henry Moore. This auction gives a unique glimpse into the collection of someone who has greatly shaped contemporary art.
