Swiss Expressionism Traveling Exhibition Reaches Aosta

exhibition · 2026-04-27

The Museo Archeologico di Aosta hosts the second leg of the traveling exhibition "Swiss Expressionism: Languages of Artists from Beyond the Alps," curated by Daria Jorioz, Andrea Lutz, and David Schmidhauser. The first stop was at the Kunst Museum Winterthur, and the next will be at the Städtische Museen Heilbronn in Germany. The show explores the Swiss contribution to Expressionism, a major early 20th-century movement, highlighting groups such as Der Moderne Bund in Lucerne, Rot-Blau in Basel (close to Die Brücke), Le Falot in Geneva, and the Orsa Maggiore group in Ascona. Featured artists include Cuno Amiet and Giovanni Giacometti (father of Alberto), with works like Giacometti's "Three Apples on a White Tablecloth" (1907-08) showing Cézanne's influence. Female artists Helen Dahm, Marianne von Werefkin, and Alice Bailly are also included, with Bailly's cool palette contrasting the vibrant colors of others. The museum has installed new lighting in the first room to enhance viewing. The exhibition also presents works by German artist Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, including sculptures. Kirchner, associated with Cubism, was persecuted by the Nazi regime: his works were seized and removed from museums, and many were destroyed in the "Degenerate Art" exhibition that began in Munich in 1937. The trauma contributed to his suicide in mid-1938.
