Swiss Animator Matthias Strasser Wins Student Oscar for 'The Panic Inside'

Matthias Strasser, a Swiss director and animator, has won a Student Oscar for his animated short film 'The Panic Inside'. Strasser, a graduate of the Animation Institute at the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg, Germany, was among the twelve winners announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles on Wednesday (local time). The 53rd Student Academy Awards competition attracted 2,972 entries from nearly 900 educational institutions worldwide. The film, described by the academy as the story of Jacob, a chronic people-pleaser who collapses under the pressure of constant expectations and lands in a surreal in-between world, combines 2D and 3D animation with live-action elements and runs just under nine minutes. The awards ceremony will take place on September 14, during the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in Canada, marking the first time the ceremony is held outside the US or UK. The winners will receive gold, silver, or bronze medals, with the rankings announced at the ceremony. All winners are eligible to compete in the short film categories at the 2027 Oscars. Last year, German director Tobias Eckerlin, also a Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg graduate, won the gold prize in the animation category for 'A Sparrow's Song'. The Student Academy Awards, established in 1972, have served as a springboard for Hollywood careers, with past winners including John Lasseter, Spike Lee, Robert Zemeckis, and Cary Fukunaga.
