Sweden to establish new foreign spy agency by 2027
Sweden announced plans to create a new foreign intelligence service, the Sweden's foreign intelligence service (UND), set to launch in January 2027. Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard stated that the war in Ukraine highlighted the need for information advantage and rapid technical adaptation, comparable to advanced weapons. The UND will take over some duties from MUST and collaborate with Sweden's Armed Forces, Sapo, and the National Defence Radio Establishment. This move follows Sweden's abandonment of two centuries of military nonalignment to join NATO after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, with Stenergard noting new expectations as an ally.
