Swarthmore College hosts symposium and exhibitions on artists addressing war and political crises

Swarthmore College is hosting a series of events that delve into how modern artists react to warfare and political turmoil. This initiative features two simultaneous exhibitions, a symposium, and a poetry reading. From March 4 to April 10, the List Gallery will showcase Daniel Heyman's work, "Bearing Witness, Recent Works," which includes poignant portraits and testimonials from former Iraqi detainees collected over four years, emphasizing human dignity without bias. The symposium, led by Janine Mileaf, Assistant Professor of Art History, will include artists Daniel Heyman, Damian Cote, Juan Manual Echavarria, Melissa Ho, and documentary photographer Andrew Lichtenstein. Scheduled for 10 am on Saturday, March 20, at the Lang Performing Art Center Cinema, the discussion will focus on artists' roles in addressing global health, welfare, and violence. At 1 pm, poet Nick Flynn will perform at McCabe Library, where "Printmakers Go to War" is displayed until April 9. All events are free and accessible to the public.
