Suzanne Lafont's photographic practice defies conventional categories

Suzanne Lafont's photographic approach resists standard classifications applied to contemporary photography. Neither the concept of "fabricated images" nor that of "staging" appropriately describes her work. Similarly, notions of "pure photography" or "direct photography"—including the American tradition of "straight photography"—fail to capture her methodology. Her practice exists outside these typical frameworks used to present photographic creation. This perspective was articulated in a 1988 article examining Lafont's distinctive artistic position.
