Suzanne Jackson's First New York Solo Show at Ortuzar Projects Features Suspended Anti-Canvases

exhibition · 2026-04-22

From November 20, 2019, to January 25, 2020, Ortuzar Projects hosted Suzanne Jackson's inaugural solo exhibition in New York. The showcase includes artworks spanning from the 1980s to the present, featuring five newly created pieces that hang like tapestries. At 75, Jackson, who started her artistic journey in Los Angeles, established Gallery 32 in the late 1960s. Her innovative "anti-canvases" merge painting with repurposed materials. Notable pieces on display are "history drawing-cracked wall (2016-2019)," "El Paradiso (1981-84)," "oldblueshanging, while she waits (2017)," "His and Hers (2018)," and "Ebenezer Crossing (2017)." Her diverse background as a costume designer, dancer, and poet influences her exploration of nature, memory, and the African-American narrative.
