Suzanne Cotter Appointed Director of Museum of Contemporary Art Australia

institutional · 2026-04-20

Suzanne Cotter will become director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia in January 2022, succeeding Elizabeth Ann Macgregor. Currently leading Luxembourg's Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean (MUDAM), Cotter brings extensive international experience including leadership at Porto's Museum of Contemporary Art of the Serralves Foundation and curatorial roles at New York's Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation and Modern Art Oxford. Her appointment follows Macgregor's March departure announcement after two decades leading the institution. Cotter's career includes co-curating the 10th Sharjah Biennial in 2011 and serving as secretary general for the International Committee for Modern and Contemporary Art Museums. In 2005, she received France's Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres honor. Cotter expressed enthusiasm for the MCA's commitment to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists and the museum's social impact programs. She emphasized the institution's vital role during the COVID-19 pandemic and amid global environmental and social justice movements. Macgregor described her tenure as professionally thrilling and chose the museum's 30th anniversary as an appropriate transition moment.
