Suzann Victor's 'A Thousand Histories' at Gajah Gallery Singapore explores colonial imagery and kinetic perception.
Singaporean artist Suzann Victor will showcase her solo exhibition, 'A Thousand Histories,' at Gajah Gallery Singapore from August 2 to September 7, 2025. This exhibition features kinetic lanterns and a 6-meter wall suspended in mid-air, adorned with thousands of lenses that project rotating images. For nearly thirty years, Victor has explored themes such as feminism, disembodiment, and the legacies of colonialism. Key pieces include 'Third World Extra Virgin Dreams' (1997) from the 6th Havana Biennale, 'Bloodline of Peace' (2015), and her Lens-Sculpture series, which comprises 'A Thousand Skies' (2017) and 'Rising Sun' (2018). Her latest works are 'River of Returning Gazes' (2022) and 'A Patchwork Tells a Thousand Histories' (2023). Anca Rujoiu emphasizes that the exhibition challenges surveillance through optical physics, turning the gallery into a cinematic space.
