Suspension: Aerial History of Abstract Sculpture at Palais d'Iéna
During FIAC 2018 in Paris, the Olivier Malingue gallery organized the exhibition 'Suspension: Aerial History of Abstract Sculpture 1918-2018' at the Palais d'Iéna, the seat of the Economic, Social and Environmental Council. The building, a modernist masterpiece by Auguste Perret (the 'poet of concrete'), features a monumental hall with neoclassical grandeur and modernist touches, including concrete Ionic columns and helical staircases. Perret worked on the project from 1937 to 1946, with urban development continuing until 1995. The exhibition presents fifty works by thirty artists suspended from the ceiling, offering a rare public access to this architectural gem. Works include a mobile by Alexander Calder, a curious colored latex piece by Marcel Duchamp, and contributions from Tomás Saraceno, Cerith Wyn Evans, Louise Bourgeois, Olafur Eliasson, Hans Haacke, Man Ray, Bruno Munari, and Ernesto Neto. The show runs only twelve days, closing on October 28.
