Suspended Hugging Hammock Simulates Human Embrace
Diego Reggiani's Suspended Hugging Unit (SHU) is a speculative design project that simulates the sensation of a human embrace through a suspended self-binding hammock. Created as a master's thesis for Politecnico di Milano, the SHU is handmade from over 500 meters of rope using crocheting techniques, drawing from shibari aesthetics. It features a responsive thermal system with shape memory metal wires that tense gently when activated by warmth, making the structure appear alive. The project explores the replacement of physical intimacy by technology in an increasingly mediated society, provoking reflection on touch, loneliness, and emotional dependency on technology.
