Susanne Franco on Dance in Museums: Yvonne Rainer's Trio A at Palazzo Grassi

Curator and scholar Susanne Franco discusses the relationship between dance and museums in an interview. At Palazzo Grassi in Venice, a masterclass and lecture-performance by dancer Sara Wookey honor American choreographer Yvonne Rainer. The events are part of the Muoviti Muoviti! Danza musica performance program, which Franco founded in 2017. From May 27 to 30, 2019, Wookey will lead a masterclass for dancers on transmitting Rainer's Trio A (1966), followed by a public lecture-performance. Trio A, first presented in 1966 as The Mind is a Muscle, Part I, is a five-minute movement sequence without music, emblematic of postmodern dance. Rainer, born in 1934, rejected virtuosity and spectacle, advocating for everyday movement. The project also connects to the European research project Dancing Museums. The Democracy of Beings (2018-2021), supported by Creative Europe, which explores new ways of experiencing art through dance. Partners include Ca' Foscari University, Fondazione Fitzcarraldo, and several museums. A call for dancers is open until May 13.
