Susana Guerrero's 'El cuerpo abierto de la hembra' at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel

Spanish artist Susana Guerrero presents her solo exhibition 'El cuerpo abierto de la hembra' at 532 Gallery Thomas Jaeckel in Basel, running from April 21 to June 27, 2026. The show explores themes of decapitation, motherhood, alchemy, repair, and feminine energy through a ritualistic lens. Guerrero reinterprets decapitated figures such as Saint Catherine of Alexandria, Medusa, and the Mare dels Peixos, transforming narratives of victimhood into symbols of regeneration and power. Her practice inverts patriarchal stories, seeing potential for life and energy where tradition saw monsters or martyrs. The exhibition builds on her earlier work 'La máquina de sangre' at the Museo de la Universidad de Alicante, curated by Remedios Navarro, which framed her practice as metamorphosis and alchemy. In Basel, Guerrero's materials—metal, electrical cable, ceramics, fibers—are imbued with symbolic meaning: metal becomes armor or relic, cable becomes nerve or blood, ceramics become organs or votive remains. The works are not merely contemplative but perform acts of repair through cutting, assembling, braiding, modeling, twisting, and suspending. The exhibition is curated by Ilda Caeiro.
