Susan Shatter Memorial and Legacy as Watercolor Advocate
Mark your calendar for October 5 at 5 pm for a memorial service honoring Susan Shatter at the Century Association. Shatter, a renowned contemporary artist who passed away in July 2011, was known for her remarkable watercolor skills. She aimed to enhance the reputation of watercolors, moving away from their amateurish Victorian connotation. Her art often depicted American landscapes, from Utah’s deserts to Maine's shores. In the mid-1990s, she created an abstract series inspired by her battle with breast cancer, expressing a mix of fear, sorrow, and joy. This work featured in the 2003 'Tracking the Terrain' exhibition at SUNY Stony Brook, which included a catalog by Donald Kuspit. Shatter studied at Boston University, Pratt Institute, and Skowhegan, had her first solo show in 1975, led the National Academy of Design, and curated a 2002 exhibition at the New York Studio School, showcasing forty artists.
