Susan Provan steps down after 30 years leading Melbourne International Comedy Festival
Susan Provan is stepping down as director of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) after 30 years, with a successor to be announced. When she started in 1995, the festival had 118 shows; it now features 806 shows across over 200 venues, with more than 2,000 comedians. Provan expanded the festival's hub at Melbourne Town Hall, introduced online ticketing, and actively boosted female participation—this year women claimed over half the top gala spots. She also championed First Nations comedians through the Deadly Funny competition, which has launched talents like Steph Tisdell and Elaine Crombie. Under her leadership, MICF became the world's largest dedicated comedy festival, with initiatives like RAW Comedy and Class Clowns nurturing future stars such as Aaron Chen, Hannah Gadsby, and Ronny Chieng. Provan also fostered cultural exchanges with India, Malaysia, and Singapore. She will remain involved in the comedy community after stepping down.
