Survey: 69% of Canadians Support Keeping American Booze Ban

A new survey by Abacus Data reveals that nearly 70% of Canadians support the ban on American alcoholic beverages, despite threats of additional U.S. tariffs. The ban, enacted in March 2025 by most Canadian provinces, has been lifted only in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The survey, conducted in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, and Atlantic Canada, found 69% of respondents want to keep restrictions, 19% want them lifted, and 11% are unsure. Support is highest in British Columbia (72%), followed by Ontario and Atlantic Canada (69%) and Manitoba (63%). Age and political affiliation influence opinions: 78% of those aged 60+ support the ban, while 60% of those aged 30-44 do; 83% of Liberal voters, 84% of NDP voters, and 53% of Conservative voters are in favor. The survey follows the Trump administration's announcement of a 50% tariff on Canadian goods, effective August 19, in response to Canadian tariffs on American auto parts. U.S. alcoholic beverage exports to Canada fell by about 81% (from $718 million to $137 million) in 2026 compared to 2025. British Columbia Premier David Eby stated there is "not a chance in hell" U.S. booze will return to shelves, while Spirits Canada urged engagement. Abacus Data CEO David Coletto noted that provincial governments have "considerable public room" to keep American alcohol off shelves, reflecting a broader public instinct not to reward economic pressure with concessions.
