Superfluo: New Non-Profit Window Space Launches in Milan
Superfluo, a new non-profit art space, opens on October 29, 2020, at via Francesco Reina 9 in Milan. Founded by artist Andrea Cancellieri and curator Gianluca Gramolazzi, the project occupies a former commercial shop with sandblasted windows leaving a 50×50 cm square visible from the street. The space aims to promote emerging artists and creatives across art, music, design, and fashion through a format called Bello Bellissimo. Each collaboration will use the window differently: as an exhibition space, a window onto new designer collections, or a site for outdoor musical performances. Gramolazzi describes Superfluo as an atypical, spontaneous, periodic advertising slot that amplifies beautiful things. The inaugural project features artist Mariacristina Cavagnoli, presenting the preparatory cartoon for her work Altrove (2017) alongside an audio piece produced by Superfluo, running from October 29 to November 22, 2020. This coincides with her exhibition DE SIDERANTES opening November 13, 2020, at the Museo Civico di Crema e del Cremasco. The display emphasizes the often-overlooked preparatory studies behind contemporary artworks. Future collaborators include visual artist Marco Siciliano, singer Ponee, and brand FSTD. The window-showcase trend emerged post-lockdown to avoid indoor contagion, seen previously at Le Dictateur and Massimo De Carlo in Paris, as well as Edicola Notte by H. H. Lim in Rome.
