Sung Yun Jang's Slow2 installation uses seaweed-based biodegradable material and Korean spatial principles
At the Salone Satellite 2026 in Milan, designer Sung Yun Jang unveiled Slow2, the latest installment in his Slow Project series. This lighting installation offers a fresh take on baramgil, a traditional Korean architectural concept that emphasizes aligned doors and windows for enhanced sightlines and natural airflow. Housed in a booth measuring 388 × 200 × 288 cm, the artwork features visual layering to create an illusion of depth. The installation itself is approximately 150 × 55 × 160 cm, comprising two interlocking circular forms in a repetitive pattern. Its biodegradable material, derived from seaweed-based agar, is free from synthetic chemicals. Additionally, the piece utilizes LED lights, a steel framework, insulating tubing, adhesive, and natural pigments. Drawing inspiration from hanok architecture, the circles, each around 50 cm in diameter, are spaced 30 cm apart across 4.5 stacked repetitions. The construction method pays homage to the Goryeo period’s Ten-story Stone Pagoda of Gyeongcheonsa Temple. Edible pigments from paprika and gardenia provide color, transitioning from a natural tone at the base to deeper reds at the top. The project was showcased alongside S R Choi + KPE meta4 and captured in photographs by Francesco Russo.
