Sung Tieu Wins 2024 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research
Sung Tieu, a German-Vietnamese artist based in Berlin, has been awarded the 2024 Schering Stiftung Award for Artistic Research, as announced by Schering Stiftung and KW Institute for Contemporary Art. The biennial award includes a €15,000 prize and a solo exhibition at KW. Previous winners include Anna Daučíková (2018), Hiwa K (2016), Kate Cooper (2014), and Wael Shawky (2011). The jury, comprising Defne Ayas, Emma Enderby, Charlotte Klonk, Jenny Schlenzka, and Helena Uambembe, selected Tieu for her critical engagement with Germany's complex history and overlooked narratives. In a statement, they emphasized the importance of honoring artistic positions that address socio-political challenges. Cassie Packard, writing in ArtReview Summer 2024, noted that Tieu's approach to storytelling about fracking aims to make the phenomenon and its lack of regulation more perceptible, as a step toward a livable future. The award will support new work, a publication, and a survey exhibition.
