Sung Tieu's sold artwork funds five-year board seat at KW Berlin for curator Mi You

institutional · 2026-04-20

Sung Tieu has secured institutional influence through a contractual artwork. Her piece 1992, 2025, which closed in May at KW Institute in Berlin, included a four-page document outlining a sale to fund a five-year board membership. The resulting work, Declaration of Donation (2025), has been sold, enabling Tieu to appoint academic and curator Mi You to KW's executive board. This board also oversees the Berlin Biennale. Mi You joins existing members including collectors Julia Stoschek and Karen Boros, alongside established figures like curator Klaus Biesenbach and artist Olafur Eliasson. In a separate September appointment, Haegue Yang became the new chair of KW. Tieu, born in Vietnam but a long-time resident of Germany, is set to represent Germany at the 2025 Venice Biennale.
