Sun & Sea to be restaged in Germany in 2021
The Lithuanian Pavilion's Golden Lion-winning installation/performance Sun & Sea (Marina) will be restaged in May 2021 at the disused Bauhaus swimming pool adjacent to a former power plant in Luckenwalde, Germany. The work, created by director Rugilė Barzdžiukaitė, writer Vaiva Grainytė, and artist Lina Lapelytė, and curated by Lucia Pietroiusti (Curator of General Ecology at Serpentine Galleries and member of the 13th Shanghai Biennale curatorial team), will be powered entirely by 100% renewable electricity from E-WERK's Kunststrom. E-WERK, a former coal factory built in 1913 and closed in 1989, was acquired in 2017 by the Performance Electrics gGmbH collective led by Pablo Wendel and is now directed by Wendel and Helen Turner. The project is part of E-WERK's Power Night 2021 program curated by Pietroiusti, who praised the institution as an ecologically minded model for future art organizations. A crowdfunding campaign aims to raise €40,000 for sand, deck chairs, and performers. The original 2019 Venice presentation transformed a Military Marina space into a beach with performers singing, viewed from a balcony; the jury awarded the Golden Lion for its original use of space and Brechtian staging.
