Sun Life Recognized as AWS Digital Innovation Hero for AI-Driven Insurance Transformation

Sun Life, a financial services firm with a 130-year history that serves one in eight residents of Hong Kong, has been recognized as an AWS Digital Innovation Hero due to its commitment to a people-centric digital transformation. The company created Advisor Buddy, an AI-driven tool leveraging generative AI and Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud solutions to enhance workflow efficiency for advisors. Developed in collaboration with advisors, this tool addresses significant challenges, allowing for quicker market entry and enabling advisors to prioritize client engagement. Sun Life has transitioned most of its application suite in Hong Kong to AWS Cloud, utilizing tools like SageMaker for data enhancement. The collaboration involves practical workshops, architecture sessions, and LLM tuning to bolster internal skills. Following a cautious approach to new technologies, Sun Life is guided by Hong Kong's Insurance Authority Gen A.I. Sandbox++ regulatory framework. In May 2025, the company will host AI Month, partnering with external trainers, including AWS, to improve staff skills. Its digital strategy for 2026-2028 centers on three key areas: empowering advisors, modernizing internal practices, and establishing AI governance. Buchanan from Sun Life highlighted that the aim is to provide tools that genuinely empower people, rather than adopting AI for its own sake.
