Summer exhibitions in Calabria: Giosetta Fioroni at MARCA and Mimmo Rotella at MACA
The Museo MARCA in Catanzaro presents a major retrospective of Giosetta Fioroni, a leading figure of Italian Pop Art and member of the Piazza del Popolo school in Rome. Curated by Marco Meneguzzo, Piero Mascitti, and Elettra Bottazzi (Archivio Giosetta Fioroni), in collaboration with the Fondazione Rocco Guglielmo, the exhibition features seventy works including paintings, silver papers, and documents from the Fioroni Archive. Highlights include sketches for 'La Spia Ottica', a performance that inaugurated the 1968 Festival Il Teatro delle Mostre; costume designs for Carmen directed by Alberto Arbasino in 1967 at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna; Super8 and 16mm films from 1967; and book cover illustrations. The paintings span from the late 1950s to the early 1960s, with a turn to figuration between 1963 and 1964—the year Fioroni participated in the Venice Biennale, known as the 'Pop Biennale'—and continue through 1967-1968 with images derived from her childhood photographs. Meanwhile, the MACA (Museo Arte Contemporanea Acri) in Acri dedicates a summer exhibition to Mimmo Rotella, a key figure of the Nouveau Réalisme movement founded by critic Pierre Restany. Curated by Francesco Poli, the show presents about fifty works by Rotella—including his famous décollages—alongside pieces by Yves Klein, Arman, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely, César, Raymond Hains, and Christo.
