Summer 2025 Archaeological Discoveries Across Italy

cultural-heritage · 2026-04-26

A late-Roman wall from the 4th-5th century AD was unearthed at Castelseprio Archaeological Park in Varese, pushing the site's origins back two centuries before the medieval period. The discovery was announced in late July by a team from Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore led by Marco Sannazaro. In Oria, Brindisi, excavations in July 2025 uncovered part of a 10th-11th century Byzantine complex at Parco Montalbano, initially found during park renovations between 2013 and 2015. The project, coordinated by Paul Arthur and involving five universities, revealed structures confirming the site as a frontier fortress between Lombard Benevento and Byzantine Salento, along with burials of women and children suggesting a nearby church. In Rome, construction for the Metro C station at Piazza Venezia uncovered remains of multi-story residential and commercial buildings (insulae) from the late Republican to early Imperial periods, as well as medieval lime kilns for marble processing. At the Villa Romana del Casale in Piazza Armerina, Enna, a 4th-century AD mosaic depicting flip-flop-like sandals was found, announced by the Parco Archeologico di Morgantina. Additional finds include amphorae, amulets, and architectural remains at the UNESCO World Heritage site.
