Summer 2017 Must-See Exhibitions Across Europe

Artribune's Claudia Giraud highlights top European summer exhibitions. At Bilbao's Guggenheim, Georg Baselitz's 'Heroes' series (1965/66) debuts with 68 works, plus later 'Remix' paintings. Monaco's Grimaldi Forum presents 'The Forbidden City in Monaco' with over 250 Qing dynasty objects from Beijing's Palace Museum, many never shown abroad. Tate Modern hosts a major Alberto Giacometti retrospective (first UK show in 20+ years) featuring 250+ works, including rarely exhibited plasters and drawings, thanks to the Fondation Alberto et Annette Giacometti. Zurich's Museum Rietberg displays 300 artifacts from sunken Egyptian cities Thonis-Heracleion and Canopus, excavated by Franck Goddio's IEASM, plus 40 loans from Cairo and Alexandria museums. Basel's Museum Tinguely pairs Wim Delvoye with Jean Tinguely, showing 'Tim' (2006-2008), a tattooed human skin sold to a collector, 'Cement Truck' (2012-2016), and 'Cloaca' pieces. Bremen's Kunsthalle presents 'Auto Vision' tracing media art from Nam June Paik to Pipilotti Rist, featuring Olafur Eliasson's 'Room for one colour and windy corner' (1998) and Diana Thater's 'Dolphins' (1999). Malaga's Museo Picasso adds 166 works on loan from Fundación Almine y Bernard Ruiz-Picasso para el Arte for three years, including the rarely shown 'Restaurant' (1914) and 'La Siesta' (1932).
