Sumanth Gopinath's 'The Ringtone Dialectic' Examines Mobile Sound as Cultural Form

publication · 2026-04-20

At Minnesota University's School of Music, Marxist scholar Sumanth Gopinath has released 'The Ringtone Dialectic,' a study of the cultural impact of paid ringtones from the late 1990s to the late 2000s. The ringtone market ballooned into a multibillion-dollar industry, viewed as a possible lifeline for the music sector. Gopinath explores various artistic interpretations, including Salvatore Sciarrino's 'Archeologia del Telefono' (2005) and works by Peter Hrubesch, Dirk Scherkowski, and Golan Levin. An avant-garde ringtone album featuring Ryoji Ikeda was put out by the Touch record label. He also discusses the 2005 'Hello Garci' ringtone controversy involving President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, noting the irony of her ascent during 'Generation Txt,' suggesting ringtones illustrate the convergence of music, technology, aesthetics, and economics.
