Sulla Croce: Secular Reflections on Crucifixion at Lugano's Spazio -1
The exhibition 'Sulla Croce' at Spazio -1 in Lugano, curated by Danna Olgiati, explores themes of suffering and martyrdom through 20th-century and contemporary artworks. Running until May 29, 2016, the show is installed alongside the permanent Olgiati Collection. Works include Marino Marini's 'Prigioniero' (1943) and 'Giocoliere' (1946), Adrian Paci's postmodern Via Crucis, Paloma Varga Weisz's 'Uomo sdraiato', Roberto Ciaccio's abstract crosses, Jannis Kounellis's 'Punto croce' (2013), Alberto Burri's 'Combustione plastica' (1964), Lucio Fontana's 'Deposizione', and Medardo Rosso's 'Bambino ebreo'. Giancarlo Olgiati invoked Benedetto Croce's phrase 'non possiamo non dirci cristiani' to frame the secular, political critique of contemporary suffering. A newspaper-style publication accompanies the exhibition with philosophical essays. The collection spans Futurism to Arte Povera, Nouveau Réalisme, and works by Kelley Walker, Wolfgang Tillmans, Gabriel Orozco, and Danh Vo.
