Sublime cliché: foreign academy fellows reinterpret Rome at MACRO

Artists include Julian Rosefeldt (Germany, 1965) with 'La parola è sempre l’avanguardia dell’azione' (2018), showing horses galloping past monuments like the Vittoriano; Esra Ersen (Turkey, 1970) with 'Le Due Rome' (2020), connecting Rome and Istanbul via travertine; Rebecca Digne (France, 1982) with 'Metodo dei Loci' (2019), featuring an elephant in Villa Medici gardens; Christoph Keller (Germany, 1967) with 'Ceppo Sradicato' (2018), a maritime pine stump; Bianca Bondi (South Africa, 1982) with 'The Perennial Truth' (2025), a garden overtaking a bar counter; Iván Argote (Bogotá, 1983) with 'Excroissances' (2022), showing natural elements on ancient sculptures; Hayahisa Tomiyasu (Japan, 1982) with 'Pali' (2021), a photographic series on urban poles; Jenny Holzer (USA, 1950) with 'For the Academy' (2007); and Giovanna Silva (Milan, 1980) with 56 photographs of academies and cultural institutes. The exhibition highlights both grand and intimate aspects of Rome, emphasizing the city's role as a melting pot of cultures.
