SubBrixia: Contemporary Art Installations in Brescia's Subway

exhibition · 2026-05-05

SubBrixia is a curated exhibition of site-specific installations by five Italian artists across five stations of the Brescia metro line, which spans 14 kilometers and 17 stations. The project, organized by Nero association in collaboration with Fondazione Brescia Musei, began on October 29, 2015, with Rä di Martino's work at Marconi station, featuring a poster for an unrealized film inspired by 'The Swimmer' (1964). On December 17, 2015, Marcello Maloberti installed 'Brixia' at Stazione station, a vertical sculpture resembling a road sign with the word 'Brescia' upside down, referencing the archaeological city below. On January 28, 2016, Francesco Fonassi presented 'Rationabiles tubas, o guarigione' at Ospedale station, a sound installation using analog electronics to create a continuous cluster from brass instruments. On April 21, 2016, Elisabetta Benassi installed a sound piece at Piazza Vittoria station broadcasting phrases from Alighiero Boetti's works every hour. On May 25, 2016, Patrick Tuttofuoco completed the cycle at Sanfaustino station with a cascading neon light installation featuring three elements: Minerva, Claudius II Gothicus, and a Corinthian column. The metro serves 15 million passengers over two and a half years.
