Su Yu-Xin’s ‘Afterstone’ in Venice Explores Pigment as Geopolitical Substance
Taiwanese artist Su Yu-Xin will unveil her exhibition ‘Afterstone’ at Lo Studio in Venice from May 4 to July 18, 2025, with support from Albion Jeune. The exhibit showcases around fifteen artworks, including a notable scroll that exceeds 3.5 meters, examining how pigment relates to geopolitics through extraction and trade. Su creates her colors by grinding pigments from various minerals and soils along the Pacific Rim, blending geological and human stories. Her pieces draw inspiration from seascapes of her childhood in Hualien, Taiwan, and her current home in California. Venice, a historical hub for East-West trade associated with Marco Polo, enhances the exhibit's significance. Su, born in 1991, studied at Taipei National University of the Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art. A walkthrough and Q&A with ArtReview's Mark Rappolt will kick off the opening on May 4.
