Study Reveals Three Patterns of AI Use in Student Writing

A recent empirical investigation explores the incorporation of AI tools by university students in their academic writing. This research, available on arXiv, comprises two distinct studies. The first study surveys 107 university students in the UK to examine AI utilization across five stages of writing: ideation, sourcing, planning, drafting, and reviewing, while also considering individual factors such as AI literacy, confidence in writing, trust, concerns about authorship, and motivation. The second study features interviews with 12 postgraduate students discussing their experiences with AI in assessed writing tasks. Results reveal that AI adoption is varied and selective, leading to three common patterns: early-stage use, late-stage use, and full-cycle integration, underscoring the necessity for customized teaching strategies.
