Study Reveals Genetic Basis of Redback Spider Self-Sacrificial Mating

Led by Kardelen Özgün Uludağ from the University of Hamburg, the research involved crossbreeding redback spiders, indigenous to Australia, with katipō spiders from New Zealand. The researchers gathered eggs, raised spiderlings, and filmed 104 successful matings using infrared cameras. Findings revealed that only about half of the hybrid males exhibited both behaviors, suggesting they are not genetically correlated. The somersaulting seems to be linked to a gene on the X chromosome, while abdominal constriction likely involves multiple genes.
